JD started hunting when he was only 5 years old and his passion for wildlife evolved over the years and at the end of 2008, due to his desire to share his intimate knowledge of the South African wildlife with others, constructed Mellaai Wing Shooting Lodge on the banks of the Vaaldam and this was the beginning, of the leading and unparalleled Wing Shooting excitement destination in South Africa.
Mellaai Wing Shooting has opted for exclusivity rather than commercialism and no more than 30 hunting clients are accepted per season. Only one hunting party is admitted at any one time, ensuring that guests enjoy exclusive use of all facilities, and the dedicated backup of an efficient, professional team
Our exclusive lodge borders the Vaal dam where the waterfowl population is due to the diverse habitat unequalled by any other area in South Africa and we have some of the best and most beautiful South African sunsets during the hunting season. For the dedicated wing shooting enthusiast we have a very large population of birds available and that are constantly on the increase:
Apart from dove and pigeon shooting where NO BAG LIMITS are applicable all other species are subjected to bag limits.
We also cater for macnab hunting together with wing shooting. These combined hunts take place in one localized area and are exclusive and are quite popular due to the fact that little traveling takes place once you arrived.
The beginning of the season provides for some of the best hot barrel pigeon shooting there is and spouses and kids are more than welcome to join you on your hunting safari. JD and all the staff at Mellaai Wing Shooting believe that through the maintaining of an intimate and warm friendship with our clients one have the best times of your life.
At the end of your safari you will receive a certificate to be placed in your trophy room, stating that you are a true wing shooter and it will confirm full detail of the date and time of the safari, as well as the full detail of birds that was shot.
The hunting season in South Africa is from 1 May to 31 August
April to August is our autumn and winter months and you can expect moderate days with very cold evenings and mornings.
There is no age restriction to hunt in South Africa and the beginning of the season provides for some of the best hot barrel pigeon shooting there is.
